Qwest Communications And “Human Calculator”

qwest_logo.gifQwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q) is teaming up with Scott Flansburg – the man who holds the title of “Fastest Human Calculator” in The Guinness Book of World Records – to amaze Minnesota State Fair visitors with math secrets.

Visitors to the Qwest Quad exhibit at the Minnesota State Fair on Aug. 24, from 2-5 p.m. will be stunned as the “Human Calculator” demonstrates his mind-blowing ability to compute complex mathematical equations in his head faster than a machine.

“The Minnesota State Fair is a special tradition for Minnesotans, and Qwest is always proud to be part of the fair experience,” said John Stanoch, Qwest’s Minnesota state president. “The Human Calculator is a ‘must see’ at this year’s fair; his extraordinary talents will impress parents and inspire kids to learn more about math.”

Using more than 14 years of teaching background, plus a personal mission to help people improve their basic math skills, Flansburg empowers kids with the tools necessary to make math easier and more enjoyable. And, with the same thrilling speed and talent he has demonstrated to national audiences on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” the Human Calculator also amazes parents by showing them how much money they might save by bundling their communications services with Qwest.

“Math is used in all aspects of our lives every day,” said Flansburg. “As a numbers guy, I can show people easy math secrets for improving their math skills. Plus, I can show people how they can multiply their odds of saving money by bundling their communications services with Qwest.”An Amazing Sum of Prizes for One Lucky Fairgoer
Math is critical for success in school curriculums, but it can intimidate and discourage students who may not have a high aptitude for it. Flansburg’s unique method of making math accessible for all students can help kids overcome their math hurdles and find excitement in math, especially as they make their way into the upcoming school year.

To increase the fun “exponentially,” kids are invited to the Qwest Quad exhibit at the Minnesota State Fair on Aug. 24 from 2-5 p.m. to meet the Human Calculator. While learning fun math tricks, kids can guess the number of M&Ms in a large bowl for the chance to win an iPod(r) nano and a portable DVD player.

A Bundle of Qwest Activity
The Human Calculator is just one of many exciting activities in store for visitors to this year’s Minnesota State Fair. Fairgoers who stop by the Qwest Quad exhibit from Aug. 24 through Sept. 4 will also have the opportunity to win a variety of prizes, including iTunes downloads, iPod nanos, portable DVD players and digital cameras.

Additionally, Qwest is working with the East Side Boys and Girls Club to teach kids how to “turn on the calculators in their brains.” The Human Calculator will appear at the club on Aug. 23 for a special performance of math games, tricks and exercises.
